Pearl Jam - Backspacer by Sharina Parsottam

Small

Released 18th September, 2009 - Universal Music

Having been 18 years since their debut record Ten, they still deliver just as well as they did in their heyday and kudos to that - still possessing a grungy element, invigorating each new album with a revived new sound and Backspacer is solid proof of that. More mature all the same, it's like a breath of fresh air. Through their own label Monkeywrench Records - yes, following Pearl Jams self-titled release three years ago, they're finally back with a gleaming album and punchy single to boot.

Backspacer launches with a large dose of explosiveness - the first few tracks - of straight up jam goodness before mellowing out with a somewhat folky 'Just Breathe', which Vedder believes is the closest thing to an actual Pearl Jam love song. Also chilled yet passionate 'Amongst the Waves' before jumping back into the powerful 'Unthought Known', a definite standout track as well as strong and meaningful, 'The End'.

The first four songs, which includes their lead single 'The Fixer' reflects their energy fuelled live performance. Fun, catchy, singalong tune that you bop your head to unconsciously. Just in time for their tour down under, it's given us a great deal to be amped about and no excuses to miss them in November.

At 37 minutes long, it is their shortest release which is disappointing but the content makes it forgivable and in some ways good that it's not lengthy and exhausting. And no, this album doesn't suffocate you with songs about activism and politics. It hits you with intensely sweet lyrics, rocking riffs and it becomes more gratifying with every listen. Backspacer is without a doubt a record that needs to be amongst your collection and don't miss out on seeing them here next month, this is the first time they're back in New Zealand after eleven years.
