Shihad “Killjoy” Live at San Francisco Bathhouse, Wellington Saturday 31st July 2010 With Special Guests 'Cairo Knife Fight' by Nick Heslop

Wide

Shihad. Killjoy. Start to finish live. Wellington.

For most hardcore Shihad fans this day couldn't come soon enough, and the sold out crowd was testament to the fact that their second full length album is as popular today as it was when it was released 15 years ago.

Sure the boys have aged, but their live shows have not tamed with time. For those not familiar with their pedigree; Shihad are widely regarded as "New Zealands best live roct act". And after over 50 live Shihad shows, I am still queing on ticket release day to ensure I get mine.

Cairo Knife Fight opened with their soundscape of clever live looping and texture laiden guitar riffs. Every time I see them live they seem to get better. A definite band to watch if you haven't seen them already.

Shihad ran onstage in usual energetic fashion and with a quick count from Jon launched in album opener, and old live stapel You Again. Immediately the timber floor at the San Francisco Bathhouse began to naturally flex as the the crowd did what was expected.Shihad Killjoy Concert

Things didn't let up with Gimme Gimme, and the night only intensified from there. Jon decided that Deb's Night Out was the perfect chance to get into the crowd and perfomed the second half of the song standing on shoulders supported by many. Energy is something this guy has no shortage of. His relentless live performances bring the best out of any crowd.

Bitter re-energised the set, and Jon declared that it was only the second time they had ever played For What You Burn, with the first being a week before in Christchurch.

After a short encore break, Jon returned to declare "We can only go backwards from here.." and they launched into Churn classic Screwtop, before some debate between the band as to which song would follow. They finished with an enthusiastic but cut short version of It from their Devolve EP.

Whether they're opening for mega-acts like AC/DC, or playing in a small club like last night Shihad always play like its their last show. Never a dissapointment live, I can't wait for Thursdays The General Electric show. See you there...
