Incubus Auckland Show
Artist: Incubus
Date / Venue: January 31st 2012, Vector Arena, Auckland
Californian rockers Incubus returned to Auckland last night for one of two shows in New Zealand (the other being Wellington tonight).
To my count this was the fifth time Incubus have visited our shores but the first time they have played at Auckland's Vector Arena - A venue that has the tradition of being mixed in it's sound quality, sadly last night leant toward bad.
This certainly wasn't an indication to the quality of Incubus and their tight set, kicking things off with ‘Megalomaniac' from 2004's A Crow Left of the Murder.
From there the band played a mixture of hits spanning their career including singles ‘Pardon Me', ‘Are You In?', and ‘Drive' from 1999's Make Yourself, ‘Nice to Know You', and ‘Wish You Were Here' from 2001's Morning View, ‘Anna Molly', and ‘Love Hurts' from 2006's Light Grenades, even playing a tonne of songs from last years If Not Now, When? album which the tour is aptly named after.
While the hit singles were more popular with the crowd it was the new songs ‘Adolescents', ‘If Not Now, When?', ‘In the Company of Wolves', ‘Isadore', and ‘Switchblade' that while weren't as well known, were loudly applauded to which the band were very appreciative.
Lead singer Brandon Boyd kept the chatter to a minimum constantly thanking the crowd, with the band rolling through the songs and letting the music speak for itself (21 songs in total, clocking in at one hour three quarters). The only moment of chaos was when Boyd took off his shirt, which had the girls in the crowd screaming.
Long time fans of the band would have been excited for the equal amount of hit singles and album tracks on offer, including the slightly strange and not expected encore of ‘Zee Deveel' from A Crow Left of the Murder, and ‘A Certain Shade of Green' from 1997's S.C.I.E.N.C.E album.
However it was a fitting end to a concert filled with 5000 odd fans of varying ages screaming for more but equally satisfied in what they witnessed.
